30 October 2017: The Convention Secretariat for the FCTC has issued a Note Verbale (NV) which calls upon Parties to remain vigilant to the tobacco industry’s efforts to undermine the implementation of Article 5.3. The NV highlights several issues including:
- The UN Global Compact’s decision to end its dealings with the tobacco industry, delisting the four tobacco companies as participants.
- Calls upon the FCTC Parties of the ILO governing body to refer to the UN Model Policy and support the exclusion of the tobacco companies from the ILO’s programmes and initiatives.
- Calls upon Parties to be aware of the recent initiatives of the tobacco industry which could damage tobacco control and jeopardise implementation of Article 5.3, such as the newly launched Foundation for a Smoke-Free World, funded by Philip Morris International and another initiative, the PMI IMPACT.
