Poland considers the Philip Morris International (PMI) funded Foundation for a Smoke-Free World as being part of the tobacco industry

13 February 2018:

The Ministry of Health considers the Philip Morris International (PMI) funded Foundation for Smoke-Free World as being part of the tobacco industry.

The MOH has sent a letter, dated 9 January 2018, to the Chancellor, Vice-Rectors and Deans of all medical schools informing them that Poland is a party to WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and treats the PMI funded Foundation as the tobacco industry’s activity.

The letter states that the Ministry of Health pays special attention to the fact Article 5.3 of the Convention provides, “In setting and implementing their public health policies with respect to tobacco control, Parties shall act to protect these policies from commercial and other vested interests of the tobacco industry in accordance with national law”.

The letter informs the Chancellor, Vice-Rectors and Deans that they should not accept any support from the Foundation and that any research funded from this source could not be used to advocate for changes in law.
